Cat Dissection(heart)

Today we opened up the cat's chest cavity and we removed its heart and sternum. We first ran the scalpel along the sides of the sternum to detach it from the ribs so that we could take it out. We did this so that we could open up the cats chest in order to see the organs inside. This procedure exposed the lungs and heart of the cat. We cut the major veins and arteries that attached the heart of the cat to the inside of its chest. Once the arteries were cut we removed the heart from the body and we removed the pericardium sac from around the heart.
This was an interesting procedure. We learned alot about the body during this. There are many veins inside that are attached to the heart, there are more than I had thought there was. The sternum was also a lot less solid than I had expected it would be. The lungs looked a lot different than I expected them to look, they were very flat.

5 Slides from Summer Work

1. From the 3rd slide I learned The Structural Organization of the Body:
Chemical- Atoms form Molecules
Organelles- all cells of complex organisms contain these
Cells- smallest unit of all living things
Tissue- Made up of groups of cells with a similar function
Organ- structure made up of two or more tissues that performs a specific function
Organ System- a group of organs that work together to perform a common function
Organism- the highest level of structural organization
2. From the second slide I learned that Anatomy is the structural organization of an organisms body, and that Physiology is a branch of science dealing with the funcitions and activities of life.
3. From the fourth slide I learned that the eleven body systems are: Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Circulatory, Lymphatic, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive.
4. From the fifth slide I learned that the Functional Characteristcs of Human Life are: Maintain boundaries/ movement, sensitivity, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, and growth.
5. From the sixth slide I learned that Homeostasis is the body keeping itself regulated. Homeostasis is important because it keeps bodily processes running smoothly and helps you stay healthy.
